Urban Design

I conducted a Literature Review of Mayor of London, TfL, and other government documentation. This highlighted a need for urban redevelopment in Whitechapel.

I was inspired by this research to renovate Whitechapel Road, alongside the Whitechapel Vision, to benefit the local community and environment. As I walked down Whitechapel Road everyday, I really started to see realise how possible the renovation could be. As soon as I had done it I could not un-see it!

Approach and Methodology

▹ I used a mixed methods approach to inform what I would redevelop on Whitechapel Road.

▹ I qualitatively analysed:

☞ The typical Traffic Patterns around Whitechapel Road

☞ The Policy reports of planned developments

☞ Ethnographic research of the site

▹ I quantitatively analysed:

☞ Health-related GIS data of the site through data analysis and GIS tools.

Proposal/Outcome

▹ These methods showed that:

☞ Whitechapel Road dealt with the flow of people/cars terribly.

☞ A specific section of the Road needed restoration, however, had no redevelopments planned.

☞ Whitechapel (as a whole) was lacking in various London-wide health metrics.

▹ I redesigned the street to mitigate the adversities identified in earlier research.

▹ This outcome, and accompanying research, was packaged as a poster. This was intended to speak to the local east-end audience and the Policy Makers with authority to raise awareness of my suggestions and motivate them to enact these improvements.

As the Whitechapel Vision develops are already underway, my design could definitely still happen. If you know anyone working in the council, please speak to me as I’d love to share this project with them!
