How can an understanding of the Big Five personality traits in psychology influence the effectiveness of endurance road cycling?

Summary

Methods
Netnography
Thematic Analysis
Natural Language Processing
Disciplinary perspectives
Psychology
Sociology
Cultural Studies

This interdisciplinary mixed methods project explores the motivations and psychological profiles of amateur cyclists. This is through the integration of Netnography, the study of online communities and natural language processing (NLP), using code to analyse language. Netnography provided the insights into the practical and social factors influencing cyclists' behaviours. Whereas the NLP analysis revealed the psychological factors. The combined approach uncovers the motivations and external conditions that interplay to shape an amateur cyclist’s experience. The findings are that personalized training programs, which align with cyclists' motivations and personality traits, have a positive enhancement on enjoyment and performance. Furthermore, this methodology holds potential for application in other endurance sports. This offers a framework for motivation-based training at both amateur and professional levels.
