This project focuses on three main research questions, each forming the basis for a shorter essay. Extensive conversations and research revealed the vast scope of the topic, prompting a structured approach for a more organised analysis. I will apply skills learned throughout my course and undergrad studies to explore poets’ contributions to Arabic literature comprehensively. To ensure accessibility, I will create a magazine accompanying my essays, featuring traditional academic writing (60%) and creative, interactive content (40%). This format will include entire poems with simplified analyses, handwritten-style annotations, and images, drawing on historical methods to enrich context and impact.

Approach and Methodology

Within this project, I have decided to concentrate on three main research questions, each serving as the foundation for its own shorter essay. This route was chosen after many conversations with people about my project, ongoing research, and extensive reading, which showed how expansive and large this topic is. By structuring my work around these research questions, I aim to provide a more focused and organised analysis.

Through these research questions, I will be using different skills that I have been learning throughout this course and my undergraduate studies. The methodology involves a combination of traditional academic analysis and creative, interactive presentation. Qualitative methods include literary analysis and close reading, focusing on language, imagery, and thematic elements. Quantitative methods involve the application of the VAD model to systematically analyse the emotional tone in the poetry.

The data developed includes detailed analyses of small quotes from the poems of Mahmoud Darwish and Nizar Qabbani, highlighting their language, imagery, and thematic elements. The VAD model provides systematic data on the emotional tones of their poetry. The creative presentation includes a magazine format featuring full poems, simplified analyses, handwritten-style annotations, and visual elements such as a 3D model of the VAD graph and a diamond formation of impactful words from each poet.

This structure's approach enables a comprehensive exploration of the poets’ contributions to Arabic literature. The integration of literary analysis, emotional frameworks, and creative presentation methods draws on various disciplinary perspectives, enhancing the depth and breadth of the analysis.

The academic essays will use close reading to dissect specific quotes, supported by theoretical frameworks such as the VAD model. This will highlight the emotional language used and its impact on Arabic literature. A section will explore how the poets’ work reflects political, historical, and psychological impacts. The magazine will complement the essays by presenting full texts of selected poems with straightforward analyses, using simple language and visual elements to explain the themes. Through combining these methods, the project aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of Mahmoud Darwish and Nizar Qabbani’s poetry. The traditional academic essays offer depth and rigour, while the magazine ensures accessibility and engagement, allowing the research to reach and resonate with a diverse audience.

Proposal/Outcome

The project's outcome will be a set of academic essays complemented by a creative magazine. I aim to conclude that Mahmoud Darwish's and Nizar Qabbani's poetry profoundly addresses generational trauma, with their emotional and thematic choices offering deep insights into the political and psychological impacts on Arabic literature.
