LIS Graduation 24

The LIS academic dress will consist of a black gown. Gowns should be hired from Ede and Ravenscroft. The cost is £33.

A mortar board/cap can be worn for photos but is not part of the official academic dress and as such will not be worn during the ceremony. Ede and Ravenscroft will bring your gown to the venue and will dress you ahead of the ceremony. The gowns are worn over your normal clothes, which will be visible, so make sure you dress to impress!

Once you are wearing your gown, Ede and Ravenscroft will also provide the opportunity for you to have some professional headshot photographs taken of you with your family and friends. Please follow the links on the website to order this service.

The Royal Institution has a long history of public science engagement, mirroring LIS's focus on real-world problem-solving. We are honoured to celebrate this momentous occasion for our graduates in such an inspiring location.

The Royal Institution is a five-minute walk from Green Park station, which is on the Jubilee, Victoria and Piccadilly lines. Also within a ten-minute walking distance is Piccadilly Circus station, on the Piccadilly and Bakerloo lines, or Oxford Circus station on the Victoria, Central and Bakerloo lines.

By bus

Bus numbers 9, 14, 19, 22 and 38 run along Piccadilly by the entrance to Albemarle Street.

By car

The Royal Institution is located within the Congestion Charging zone.There is limited metered parking nearby, and the nearest public car parks are located at Old Burlington Street and Arlington Street.

What time should I arrive for the ceremony?

You will be able to enter the Royal Institution from 12pm, please aim to arrive by 1pm at the latest

Is there a cost to attend the ceremony?

There is no cost to attend the ceremony. However, you will need to organise your gown hire, which costs £33.

Is there a dress code for graduands and guests?

Graduation is a formal event. Graduands and guests should wear smart clothing. If you are to wear a shirt then a tie should also be worn. Smart but comfortable shoes are important. Avoid shorts, jeans, and trainers. Appropriate military dress or the national dress of your country is also permitted.

Can I bring additional guests beyond my allocated tickets?

We have a limited number of guests allowed due to venue capacity. This means we can't guarantee extra tickets beyond the two guest tickets you've already been allocated. However, there's a possibility that more tickets might be released after July 5th. This will depend on how many people RSVP and how many spaces become available

Which cohorts will be included in the ceremony?

The ceremony honours BASc students who started in September 2021 and MASc (full-time) students who began in September 2023.

Will refreshments or meals be provided during the event?

We will provide drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), and some light snacks, with different options to cater to dietary requirements. There will be no formal meal.

Where can I park?

Where can I rent or purchase my graduation attire?

When and how will I receive my certificate?

Official certificates will be mailed out after the ceremony. Please ensure your home (permanent) non-term time address is up to date as well as your non-LIS contact details. To do this, please click here and log in to the student record system, then navigate to my details –> address.

Will there be a photographer at the ceremony?

Yes - official headshots will be done by Ede & Ravenscroft and we will also have an event photographer, as well as a videographer.

Can guests take their own photos and videos during the ceremony?

Yes, absolutely!

Will there be a livestream of the ceremony for those who cannot attend in person?

Yes! We will provide more information on how to access the livestream closer to the date.

Are there any accessibility services available for guests with disabilities?

Accessible and standard toilets are located on the ground floor by the reception area. All public areas are wheelchair accessible via the lift in the Atrium. Floor levels are announced.

Is there anything planned for after the ceremony?

There will be no official LIS-organised afterparty — you are welcome to plan whatever you would like with your peers and guests

What happens if I can't attend the ceremony after registering?
