Have you ever asked yourself, “What kind of leader am I?” Are you like Gandalf, who leads by hearts and minds, or Saruman, who leads by force of will?
Evolutionary anthropology offers a valuable perspective on leadership by way of dual strategies theory. This framework explains leadership as a trade-off between prestige and power. That is, humans achieve status in social hierarchies by either causing people to want to emulate and impress them (prestige) or by forcibly imposing their will through psychological and physical dominance (power). Different leadership styles will mix these strategies in different quantities, and different situations will require different styles of leadership.
In this interactive webinar, LIS faculty member and cognitive scientist James Carney will guide us through the dominance-prestige scale. Together, we’ll explore what these strategies mean in the workplace and how you can adjust your position on the scale to enhance your leadership approach. Sign up below.
